Artificial intelligence can answer a question in seconds. It can help us write emails, organize information, brainstorm ideas, compare options, and even suggest what we should do next.
That convenience can be incredibly useful. But it also raises an important question:
When answers are always available, are we still practicing how to find our own?
As AI becomes part of everyday life, strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills may be more important than ever.
When Technology Starts Thinking for Us
Using technology to make life easier isn't new. Calculators help with math, GPS helps us navigate, and search engines give us information almost instantly.
AI goes a step further. Instead of simply finding information, we can ask it to interpret that information, generate solutions, compare choices, and recommend what to do.
Researchers sometimes call this cognitive offloading, which happens when we transfer some of our mental work to an outside tool.
Cognitive offloading isn't necessarily negative. Technology can save time and reduce mental workload. The concern is when assistance becomes dependence.
If our first response to every difficult question is to ask AI for an answer, we may have fewer opportunities to practice working through uncertainty, evaluating options, and making decisions ourselves.
AI Should Support Our Thinking, Not Replace It
The goal isn't to stop using AI.
Instead, consider how you're using it.
Imagine you're facing a difficult decision at work. Rather than immediately asking AI what you should do, start by working through the situation yourself.
What is the actual problem? What information do you have? What are your options? What could happen with each choice?
Then AI can become another resource. It might help you identify something you overlooked or provide another perspective.
The difference is important.
Technology is supporting your thinking instead of doing all the thinking for you.
Why We Get Stuck When Solving Problems
Problem-solving can be uncomfortable because real-life problems rarely have one perfect answer.
We may worry about making the wrong choice. We may overthink every possibility. The problem may feel too large, or we may simply not know where to begin.
Eventually, avoiding the decision can feel easier than making one.
A structured problem-solving process can help.
Instead of trying to solve everything at once, identify the problem, break it into smaller pieces, consider possible solutions, choose a reasonable next step, and evaluate what happens.
You don't always need the perfect answer.
Sometimes you simply need a good next step.
Problem-Solving Builds Confidence and Resilience
Confidence doesn't mean believing you'll always make the right decision.
It means trusting that you can respond when something doesn't go as planned.
You can gather more information. You can reconsider your assumptions. You can ask for another perspective. You can change your approach.
That ability to adapt is also an important part of resilience.
Instead of seeing a setback only as failure, problem-solving encourages us to ask:
What did I learn? What can I change? What is still within my control? What can I try next?
Those questions help move us from feeling stuck toward taking action.
Strong Problem-Solvers Don't Have to Work Alone
Thinking independently doesn't mean solving every problem by yourself.
Collaboration can actually strengthen problem-solving skills.
Talking through a challenge with other people can help us see assumptions we didn't recognize, consider different perspectives, and discover possibilities we may have overlooked.
The goal isn't for someone else to give you the answer. It's to use guidance and collaboration to become more confident in your own ability to work through challenges.
Human Skills Still Matter
AI will continue to become more capable, but technology doesn't eliminate the need for human judgment.
Critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, communication, collaboration, and decision-making still matter.
AI can provide information, but we still have to decide what to do with it.
AI can suggest solutions, but we still have to determine whether those solutions make sense for our circumstances.
The better question may not be whether we should use AI.
It may be:
How can we use technology without giving up our ability to think for ourselves?
